»Because of our special culture and traditions, we are very different from other Mexican women. Our society is organised along matriarchal lines. This can also be seen on the market, in the stores and in retail. In most cases, the woman is responsible for the household income, rarely the man«

Irma, 2022 (Juchitecas, Oaxaca, Mexiko)

Quote from a woman from a contemporary matriarchal society.

The generations usually stay in the clan house. The whole clan takes care of the children’s upbringing. The man visits his mistress in the other clan only overnight (visiting marriage). Social fatherhood is much more important than biological fatherhood: This is because the mothers’ brothers are the actual fathers of the children, as they have the same clan name. A love relationship is detached from social obligations. In the event of a separation, the children continue to live in their familiar environment and there is no suffering for them. The men assume their social responsibility and their work performance throughout their lives in the family of origin and thus ensure the long-term well-being of their sisters’ children.
